Animal Welfare Requirements
Herd Animal Considerations
Goats are herd animals and require goat companions. We cannot sell single goats unless they’re joining an existing goat herd. Acceptable situations include:
- You already own goats
- You’re purchasing multiple goats from us
- Dogs, cats, or other non-herd animals are NOT suitable companions
- While horses and ponies can coexist with goats, goats still need goat friends to thrive
Health and Preparation Standards
All goats receive:
- Microchipping for registration and National Scrapie ID Program compliance (registered does and bucks only)
- Disbudding (no exceptions – though small scurs may occasionally develop)
- Coccidiosis prevention treatments and deworming as needed
- We do not vaccinate our herd so kids will not be vaccinated
Wethers receive:
- Banding before going to new homes (when age-appropriate)
- Band will remain for several weeks – separate from does during this time as fertility may continue temporarily
Health Management Philosophy
Our Natural Approach
We manage our herd holistically, focusing on excellent nutrition and proper management rather than routine medications:
Vaccination: We choose not to vaccinate our herd with CDT vaccines, instead maintaining Tetanus and CDT antitoxins for emergency use. New owners may vaccinate upon taking animals home – vaccines are available at any feed store.
Deworming: We deworm only when indicated by fecal testing or clinical signs, not on a routine schedule, to prevent resistance development.
Feeding: Our kids are weaned onto high-quality alfalfa hay and CraftsMin loose minerals. Grain is not necessary and not recommended for wethers or bucks due to urinary calculi risk.
Critical Health Information for New Owners
Stress-Related Illness: Goats are highly susceptible to stress from:
- Weaning and moving to new homes
- Weather changes (hot, cold, or damp conditions)
- Diet changes
- New environments
Warning Signs to Watch For:
- Diarrhea
- Runny nose or congested breathing
- Lethargy or depression
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
ESSENTIAL: Establish a relationship with a small ruminant veterinarian BEFORE bringing your goats home. Keep coccidiosis medication on hand – regular dewormers do NOT treat coccidiosis.

Temperament and Handling
Natural Goat Behavior
Goats are prey animals with individual personalities ranging from extroverted to naturally shy. Even friendly goats may become reserved in new environments.
Building Trust with Your New Goat
Recommended approach:
- Sit quietly nearby and let them come to you
- Avoid chasing or forcing interaction
- Use food treats to encourage approach
- Be patient – trust builds over time
We highly recommend Clicker Training as a positive reinforcement method that builds confidence and strengthens human-animal bonds. “Reaching the Animal Mind” by Karen Pryor is an excellent resource.
